How it works

In and out.
No hassle.

Georgia emissions tests are quick computer scans. Here's what to expect when you pull in.

Pull into the bay

Drive up to 244 Cleveland Ave SW during business hours. Follow the "Enter" sign into the testing bay.

We scan your vehicle

Our certified inspector connects to your car's onboard computer and runs the state emissions check.

Results go to the state

Your result is sent to Georgia electronically and you get a printed report — ready for your tag renewal.

Do I need a test?

Check your
model year.

Fulton County is one of 13 metro Atlanta counties that require a yearly emissions test before you renew your registration.

Test required

  • Gas-powered cars and light trucks (up to 8,500 lbs)
  • Model years 2002–2023 for 2026 registrations
  • Model years 2003–2024 for 2027 registrations
  • Hybrids are tested too

Usually exempt

  • The three newest model years
  • Vehicles 25 model years or older
  • Diesel and fully electric vehicles
  • Motorcycles and RVs

Pro tip: Georgia's Clean Air Force recommends testing 4–6 weeks before your renewal date, so there's time for any repairs and a retest if you need one.

Requirements are set by the state and change every year. Confirm your vehicle at cleanairforce.com or call (800) 449-2471.

FAQ

Good questions.

What do I need to bring?

Just your vehicle and payment. The test is tied to your vehicle's VIN, and the result is sent to the state automatically.

Do I need an appointment?

No. Pull in any time during business hours, Monday through Saturday, 8 AM to 6 PM.

What if my car fails?

You'll get a printed report showing why. Have the issue repaired, then bring the vehicle back with your report and repair paperwork. Georgia stations include one free retest under state rules — ask us for the details.

My check engine light is on. Will I pass?

Usually not. An illuminated check engine light is typically an automatic fail on Georgia's computer-based test, so it's best to get it diagnosed and fixed before testing.

How do I know if my car needs a test this year?

For 2026 registrations, gas-powered cars and light trucks from model years 2002–2023 need a test in metro Atlanta. Not sure? Give us a call or check cleanairforce.com.
